Dry Mouth Treatment Suggestions

There are many causes for dry mouth, but often it can be a side effect of medication or some type of medical treatment. Dealing with dry mouth is important because the saliva in your mouth can keep bacteria and fungi in check and reduce some tooth decay. To effectively thwart dry mouth, it is suggested that you drink plenty of water, avoid smoking and use of tobacco products, use of a humidifier during the night, reduction of caffeine consumption and breathing through your nose whenever possible. Brushing with a fluoride toothpaste and using fluoride rinse often can help to build up your enamel and fight tooth decay.  There are saliva substitutes available on the market for temporary relief of dry mouth symptoms.
